Diwali 2016

Thank you to Neil and his family for providing Room 1 with a gorgeous Rangoli pattern for our back table for all of Room 1 to enjoy. Today Neil taught Room 1 how to make the patterns and made a few for our buddy class Room 11 on the steps of their classroom and on black paper to enjoy in their classroom. Thank you to the kind parents for my special treats of food over the last few days and sharing their knowledge to us about Diwali.

Over the past week we have been learning about Matariki.
To celebrate Matariki today we learned to weave with harakeke (flax) with Room 7.
Before we began we discussed the tikanga when using harakeke and leaned a new karakia.
We have a few pieces each to take home and share.

Art

This week Room 1 have created Money Trees for Art with Miss Todorov. We used some different art techniques in completing our masterpieces. These were: blending dye, coin rubbing, sketching and layering. Thanks Mr Mac for your collection of coins, we were fascinated with them and had a great time discovering different coins from around the world. Our art will finish off drying over the weekend and then we will be looking at how we can frame them to be displayed in our room.

Bikes

On Tuesday Room 1 had another amazing day at Sunnyhills School as we were lucky enough to have Hamish and Adrianne from Big Foot Adventures  teach us about bike safety.

We had our own bikes and helmets checked. It was interesting to know that 21 helmets were either the wrong size, had straps that weren't fitting correctly or helmets had cracks. Hamish and Adrienne helped us with fixing them up. To have a helmet that is a correct fit we learned to do the cyclist salute and got to know how straps need to be a 'Y' and not a 'V'. We made connections to our learning about the brain earlier in the term to wearing our helmets as they protects and keeps the brain safe from injury.

We learned about how to check if our bike is safe to use. We must check brakes, tyres, rear red reflector and make sure the quick release leavers are done up properly.

We learned the three legal requirements that a bike must have to go on the road are; two brakes, a rear red reflector and the rider must be wearing a helmet.

Cathy's Short Story

Room 1 have written short stories about Robot and Spider man, two characters formed from Andrew and Daniel bringing in news to share.
The first of many adventures by Robot and Spider man has been written and published by Cathy using e-reader technology, Booktrack. Booktrack was founded in Auckland and allows published stories to have music, sound effects and ambient sound added.

Well done Cathy, Room 1 is sure that your first published book is the first of many more to come!

Toku Mihimihi - My Self Introduction

A mihimihi is a short greeting to introduce our self to other people in te reo Maori.
It is an important part of the process of meeting people for the first time.

Room 1 have been learning to write, read and present our own mihimihi in te reo Maori.
Our mihi includes where we come from, our nationality (iwi), mountain (maunga) and river (awa), school, age and name. We have worked collaboratively to help each other with our pronunciation and understanding.

To know who we are, we have to know where we come from.

Writing Postcards Home

After seeing the postcards we made displayed in Room 1 about our summer holiday, Mrs Park (Andrew's mum) kindly gave Room 1 a pile of real postcards.
Room 1 decided to write to ourselves and have them posted to our home address.
Some students in Room 1 have never received a letter or postcard, so we are looking forward to it arriving in our letterbox. Did you know, that one postcard costs 80 cents to send?
We  discussed and found out what happens to letters and postcards when we put them through the slot in the mailbox and where mailboxes can be found.
We are wondering who is going to receive their postcard first.
